Call for Submissions

The Society for the History of Children and Youth welcomes submissions of panels and papers for the 2023 bi-annual conference to be held at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario, Canada from June 8 to June 10, 2023. The conference will include three days of panels, roundtables, plenaries, and keynote addresses as well as cultural programing and a banquet.

We welcome all submissions on the history of childhood and youth from any period or location. The conference organizers aim to highlight the range and diversity of topics and conversations in the history of childhood and youth. Presenters may choose to join the conference either in person or virtually. All panels, roundtables, plenaries, and keynotes will be available to all participants.

Guidelines for Submissions

Proposed panels, roundtables, and papers are due June 30, 2022.  Decisions will be made by September 2022.

Panels will be 1.5 hours. We strongly encourage the submission of full panels, which should include three or four papers and a chair. Panel submissions should include a 300-word abstract and 1-page c.v. for each presenter as well as the proposed chair and a 100-word overview of the panel as a whole. We will also consider roundtables comprised of three or four speakers and a chair.  Roundtable submissions should include a 300-500-word description of the proposed session as well as a 1-page c.v. for each participant, including the chair.

All panels and roundtable submissions must include a chair. Chairs may also be presenting on another panel at the conference. To assemble panels, feel free to post calls for panelists at https://networks.h-net.org/h-childhood or drop @shcyhome into a tweet seeking co-panelists. You might use the hashtag #SHCY2023 on Twitter or Facebook to connect with others working on similar topics.

We encourage all full panel submissions to include at least one graduate student where possible and all panels should include a diversity of scholars in terms of institution, rank, and identity. Panels should aim for geographical and temporal breadth.  All submissions should clearly indicate whether presenters will be in-person, virtual, or are open to either option.

We will also consider individual paper submissions, out of which the program committee will assemble a limited number of panels. See above for ways to connect with others working in your field.

All proposals should include the session organizer’s name and any audio/visual or accessibility requirements.  A full checklist for submissions is below.

Conference Fees, Accessibility, and Vaccine Requirement

All participants must be members of SHCY at the time of the conference in addition to paying conference registration fees.  Details on memberships can be found here.

We aim to provide an accessible conference.  Presenters will be asked to follow Ontario’s guidelines for accessible presentations.  More information on accessible presentations can be found here.  Attendees should contact the organizers with any accessibility requirements in advance of the conference.

About Guelph

The University of Guelph is located within the Between the Lakes Purchase (Treaty 3) and the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit.  It is approximately 95 kilometers west of Toronto and accessible by train, shuttle, and car from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

Downtown Guelph is within 1-2 kilometers of the University Campus. Downtown Guelph is a friendly mix of shops and unique restaurants. Located on University of Guelph campus is the Art Gallery of Guelph. This renovated early 1900s school is worth a visit to see the contemporary Indigenous art and the sculpture part the adjoining grounds. The University of Guelph also features a 408-acre arboretum with many self-guided hiking/running trails. Delegates can stroll through the interpretive nature trails or explore a wide variety of plant collections including some 2900 varieties of trees and shrubs.
