29th Annual 2020 Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite®
October 15, 2020 - October 18, 2020
The Environmental Law Conference "at Yosemite" is nationally recognized as the largest and most prestigious gathering in California of leaders in environmental, land use, and natural resources law. We hope you will join us and many of our nation's top environmental officials, lawyers, and other professionals. Our virtual conference this year incorporates the spirit of Yosemite and our annual Yosemite conference, despite not being able to physically gather at Yosemite.
Qualifies for 16.50 Hours of MCLE Credit. Includes 2.25 hours of Recognition and Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession and Society Credit
Welcome to the 29th Annual Environmental Law Conference "At Yosemite" and Our First Virtual Gathering
I am a recent convert to the fun of the Yosemite Conference, having attended only the last seven conferences as opposed to, say, 28. Still, I'm keenly aware of the place this conference holds in people's hearts and lives. Bumping into old friends or adversaries, talking shop with your regulators, holding your retreat, finding synergies. . . this conference is much loved and anticipated.
This year, even if we're not able to physically meet, the "Yosemite Spirit" has guided us and there's much to be excited about. For some, the physical location prevented attendance in the past. For others, it was cost. Or taking that much time away. This year's virtual format makes "Yosemite" more accessible to all. And we've made some changes to be even more impactful:
- We've spread panel presentations over four days, running two tracks simultaneously, providing more time to enjoy more panels;
- We are offering the Conference, even with more MCLE, at a substantially lower cost;
- It's free to law students, thanks to the law firm of Remy, Moose & Manley;
- Our virtual platform provides opportunities to "hang out" with other attendees during breaks;
- Our Book Club comes to the Conference for the first time, discussing The Color of Law, to examine how explicitly government policies created social disparities in housing, with consequences felt and seen even today. Author Richard Rothstein will join us, and the first 100 people to register for the Conference receive a free copy of the book!
We also have some of the best from past conferences. This year, we present our Lifetime Achievement Award to Justice Ronald B. Robie and join him for a "fireside chat." Each day, we'll have an outdoor presentation, to enjoy inside or outside. For the second year, we offer a free screening of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, in addition to a kids-friendly version on-demand throughout the weekend. Look for some fun social networking opportunities as well!
Jennifer F. Novak, 2019-2020 Chair,
Environmental Law Section, California Lawyers Association
Michael H. Remy Scholarship
In his nearly thirty years of private practice, Mr. Remy represented a wide variety of public and private clients as well as nonprofit organizations.
Mr. Remy assisted large corporations and small entrepreneurs alike in various permitting and environmental matters throughout the state. Many counties, cities, and special districts relied on Mr. Remy's counsel in the processing, environmental review, and litigation of large and small projects. Some of his most notable environmental accomplishments were: heading the successful political and legal efforts to shut down the Rancho Seco Nuclear Power Plant; and representing the Sierra Club and William Hewlett against the conversion of Shirley Canyon to a commercial ski run by the Squaw Valley Ski Corporation. In 1990, the Environmental Council of Sacramento named Mr. Remy "Environmentalist of the Year."
In honor of Mike Remy, the law firm of Remy, Moose & Manley is pleased to provide complementary registration to this year's virtual conference for law students who register to attend.
